1. Introduction & Overview

The Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) is a prestigious national-level entrance examination conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It serves as the gateway to postgraduate science programs — M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree, and Integrated Ph.D. — at IITs and IISc Bangalore.

For IIT JAM 2026, IIT Bombay is the Organising Institute. The exam is jointly administered by IIT Bombay, IISc Bengaluru, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee. With 3,000+ seats across 89 postgraduate programmes at 22 IITs, IIT JAM is one of the most coveted examinations for science graduates in India.

🎓 Why pursue IIT JAM?
Clearing IIT JAM gives you access to world-class research infrastructure, internationally recognized degrees, subsidised fee structures, campus placements at top MNCs, and strong PhD & research opportunities in India and abroad. An M.Sc. from an IIT carries the same prestige as a B.Tech from an IIT in many circles.

13. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is IIT JAM and who conducts it?

IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for Masters) is a national-level entrance exam for admission to M.Sc., Integrated Ph.D., Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., and M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree programmes at IITs and IISc. It is conducted annually by one of the IITs on a rotational basis. For 2026, IIT Bombay is the organising institute.

Is there an age limit for IIT JAM?

No. There is absolutely no age limit — minimum or maximum — for appearing in IIT JAM. Candidates of any age who hold (or are completing) a relevant bachelor’s degree can apply.

Can final-year undergraduate students apply?

Yes. Students currently in the final year of their bachelor’s degree can apply for IIT JAM. However, if they qualify and are allotted a seat, they must submit proof of passing their qualifying degree (with the required percentage) by September 30, 2026. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of admission.

How many papers can I appear for in IIT JAM?

A candidate can appear for either one or two test papers. If appearing for two, both papers must be scheduled in different sessions (one in the forenoon session and one in the afternoon session). You will need to pay a higher application fee for two papers.

Is there negative marking in IIT JAM?

Yes, but only for Section A (MCQs). For each wrong answer to a 1-mark question, 1/3 mark is deducted. For each wrong answer to a 2-mark question, 2/3 mark is deducted. There is NO negative marking in Section B (MSQs) and Section C (NATs). Unattempted questions carry zero marks.

What is the difference between the qualifying cutoff and the admission cutoff?

The qualifying cutoff is the minimum score to be declared “qualified” and eligible to participate in counselling. The admission cutoff (opening and closing ranks) is the rank range within which seats are actually allotted for a specific programme at a specific IIT. The admission cutoff is significantly more competitive than the qualifying cutoff, especially for top IITs.

Do NITs also accept IIT JAM scores?

Yes. Several National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) accept JAM scores for M.Sc. admissions through the CCMN (Centralized Counselling for M.Sc.) process managed by NIT Warangal. Candidates must apply separately for CCMN counselling. The eligibility percentage for CCMN is slightly higher (60% for General/OBC/EWS; 55% for SC/ST/PwD).

What is the scope after M.Sc. from an IIT through JAM?

The scope is vast. You can pursue a PhD at IITs/IISc, TIFR, or international universities (often with full funding). You can work in research organisations like DRDO, ISRO, BARC, CSIR. The private sector includes pharma, data science, finance, IT, and analytics. Top IIT M.Sc. graduates have received packages as high as ₹27 LPA in campus placements.

Is coaching necessary for IIT JAM?

Coaching is not mandatory. Many toppers have cleared IIT JAM through self-study using standard textbooks, previous year papers, and online resources like NPTEL. However, if you need structured guidance or struggle with specific subjects, quality coaching (online or offline) can be beneficial. The key is consistent, concept-focused preparation.

When will IIT JAM 2027 notification be released?

Based on previous year trends, the IIT JAM 2027 notification is expected to be released in September 2026 on the official JAM website. Applications typically open in September and close by mid-October. Watch the official portal for announcements.
