1. What is CUET UG?

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG) is India’s single-window, national-level entrance examination for undergraduate admissions. Introduced in 2022, CUET UG is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) โ€” an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education, Government of India โ€” and has quickly become one of the most important exams in the country.

Before CUET, students had to apply separately to dozens of universities, each with its own merit criteria (often based on Class 12 board marks that varied widely across state boards). CUET replaced this fragmented system with a single, standardised, merit-based test. A student can now sit one exam and apply to over 240 participating universities โ€” including all Central Universities, and many State, Deemed, and Private institutions โ€” across India.

Why does CUET matter? Admission to prestigious universities like the University of Delhi (DU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is now exclusively based on CUET scores. Your Class 12 marks are no longer the deciding factor for Central University admissions โ€” your CUET score is.

CUET UG 2026 covers Language Tests, Domain-Specific Subject Tests, and a General Aptitude Test (GAT), giving students from Science, Commerce, and Arts/Humanities streams an equal, fair opportunity to compete for seats at the nation’s top universities.

4. Eligibility Criteria

4.1 Educational Qualification

  • Candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent examination from any recognised board (CBSE, ICSE, State Board, NIOS, or equivalent).
  • Candidates who are appearing in Class 12 in 2026 are also eligible to apply (their admission will be conditional upon passing Class 12).
  • A general minimum aggregate of 50% marks in Class 12 is recommended; however, minimum mark requirements for admission vary university-to-university and course-to-course. Always check the specific university’s admission policy.
  • Reserved category candidates typically receive a 5% relaxation in the minimum percentage requirement (i.e., 45%).

4.2 Age Limit

โœ… No Upper Age Limit: As per the NTA CUET UG 2026 Information Bulletin, there is no age limit for appearing in CUET UG. However, individual universities may have their own age-related criteria for specific programmes. Always check the eligibility conditions of the university you are applying to.

4.3 Nationality

  • Indian nationals are eligible.
  • Candidates studying outside India (NRIs, OCI card holders, foreign nationals) may also apply but will be charged a different application fee and may need to appear at international exam centres.

4.4 Number of Attempts

There is no restriction on the number of attempts for CUET UG. Candidates can appear as many times as they wish, provided they meet the eligibility criteria of the programme/university they apply to each year.

4.5 Subject Eligibility (New for 2026)

Major Change: From CUET UG 2026 onwards, students can choose any domain subject irrespective of the subjects they studied in Class 12. You are no longer restricted to subjects from your own stream. However, you must still meet the programme-specific and university-specific subject requirements for admission.

5. Reservations & Relaxations

Reservation policies in CUET-participating Central Universities follow the Government of India’s statutory reservation framework as applicable to Central Educational Institutions (CEIs).

Category-wise relaxations vary by university. Some universities may publish cutoffs in percentile rather than raw marks. Check the individual university’s admission notice.

โš ๏ธ Note: The maximum marks per CUET subject paper is 250 (50 questions ร— 5 marks each). A score of 700+ across subjects is generally recommended for top central universities; however, the final cutoff depends on total applications, seat availability, exam difficulty, and the normalization process.

10. Selection Process

CUET UG does not have a centralised counselling process. Each participating university handles its own admissions independently. Here is the general flow:

StageWhat Happens
Stage 1: Appear for CUET UGWrite the subjects chosen in your application across exam dates in May 2026
Stage 2: CUET ResultNTA declares score/percentile for each subject (~July 2026)
Stage 3: University ApplicationApply separately to individual universities using your CUET score (many have their own portals; some have deadlines before results)
Stage 4: Merit List / CutoffUniversities prepare merit lists based on CUET scores, subject combinations, and eligibility criteria
Stage 5: Counselling / Seat AllotmentUniversities conduct online or offline counselling; seats are allotted based on merit, choice, and availability
Stage 6: Document VerificationOriginal certificates (Class 10, 12 marksheets, caste/disability certificates, migration certificate) verified at university
Stage 7: Fee Payment & AdmissionPay university admission fee within the stipulated deadline to confirm your seat
Key Notes:
  • CUET scores are valid only for the 2026โ€“27 academic session and cannot be carried forward.
  • Class 12 board marks are generally not used for merit calculation in Central University admissions, but specific programmes/universities may have a minimum Class 12 percentage requirement.
  • Delhi University uses the CSAS (Common Seat Allocation System) portal. BHU, JNU, and AMU have their own dedicated admission portals.

13. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is CUET UG and why was it introduced?
CUET UG (Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduates) is a national-level standardised entrance test introduced in 2022 by NTA, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC). It was introduced to replace the inconsistent Class 12 board-mark-based admissions system with a single, merit-based, fair test accessible to students from all states and boards, including rural and underserved areas.
2. Is CUET UG mandatory for all central university admissions?
Yes. Admission to almost all Central Universities (including DU, JNU, BHU, JMI, AMU, and others) is now mandatorily based on CUET UG scores. Some State, Deemed, and Private Universities also use CUET scores, but they may have their own additional selection criteria.
3. Can Class 12 appearing students apply for CUET UG 2026?
Yes. Students who are appearing in their Class 12 board examination in 2026 are eligible to register for CUET UG 2026. Their final admission will be conditional upon them passing Class 12 with the required eligibility marks as specified by the target university.
4. How many subjects can I choose in CUET UG 2026?
You can choose a maximum of 5 subjects in total across all three sections. This includes up to 2 language papers (Section IA + optional IB), up to 3 domain subjects (Section II), and optionally the General Test (Section III). The subjects you choose should align with the admission requirements of the university/course you are targeting.
5. Are Class 12 marks considered for CUET-based admissions?
For Central University admissions, selection is primarily based on CUET scores, not Class 12 board marks. However, individual universities may set a minimum Class 12 percentage as a basic eligibility condition (e.g., 50% for General, 45% for reserved categories). Always check the specific admission criteria of the university you are applying to.
6. What is the General Test (GAT) and do I need it?
The General Test (Section III) covers General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Aptitude. It is not compulsory for all courses โ€” only courses or universities that specifically require it will mandate the GAT. For example, DU requires the General Test for many BA programmes under its CSAS portal. Always check the admission requirements of your target university and course before deciding to appear for GAT.
7. Is there negative marking in CUET UG?
Yes. There is negative marking. Each correct answer earns +5 marks, while each incorrect answer deducts โ€“1 mark. Unattempted questions carry 0 marks (no penalty). It is important to strike a balance between attempting enough questions and avoiding wild guesses.
8. How long is the CUET UG score valid?
The CUET UG score is valid only for the academic year in which the exam is conducted. CUET UG 2026 scores are valid only for the 2026โ€“27 academic session and cannot be used for admissions in future years.
9. Is there a limit on the number of attempts in CUET UG?
No. There is no restriction on the number of attempts. You can appear for CUET UG every year as long as you meet the eligibility criteria of the university/programme you wish to apply to. However, since scores are valid only for one academic session, you must re-appear each year you wish to seek admission.
10. Can a Science student appear for Humanities or Commerce subjects in CUET?
Yes! From CUET UG 2026, there are no subject restrictions based on your Class 12 stream. A Science student can appear for History, Economics, or Political Science in CUET UG, and vice versa. However, the university granting admission may still require specific Class 12 subjects as part of their programme eligibility criteria. Always verify the programme-specific requirements with the target university.

14. Conclusion & Next Steps

CUET UG has transformed the undergraduate admission landscape in India. For the first time, a student from a rural school in Bihar competes on an equal footing with a student from a top private school in Delhi โ€” the only thing that matters is your CUET score, your preparation, and your determination.

โœ… Your Action Plan for CUET UG 2026:
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Bookmark cuet.nta.nic.in and check it regularly for official updates
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Download the official Information Bulletin and syllabus PDFs from the NTA website
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Identify your target universities and courses โ€” check their subject requirements before finalising your CUET subject choices
